Elsie Mae Tarter, 90, of Guthrie, Oklahoma, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 20, at Logan Mercy Hospital.
Born in Anadarko, Oklahoma, on September 27, 1924, she was the daughter of Fred and Effie Bass. Elsie graduated from Anadarko High School and worked at the Department of Public Safety in Oklahoma City, before marrying Carl Lee Tarter, Jr. in 1950. They were happily married for 55 years.
Elsie was devoted to her family, her Lord, and her church, serving for many years as a primary Sunday School teacher. She loved gardening and cooking, especially trying fancy new recipes to feed the whole family on every holiday. She loved car trips and always wanted “to go someplace” whether to New Mexico for vacation or around the country visiting her more nomadic relations.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lee Tarter, Jr., her parents, and her siblings, Jake Base, Martin Base, Esther (Base) Watkins, Susie (Base) Watkins, Joseph Base, Milfard Base, Erfie Base, Ervin Base, Lorena (Base) Peeler, and George Base.
She is survived by her son, Clay Tarter and wife Cheryl of Guthrie; Cheryl Kerr and husband Greg of Lyons, Kansas; and her grandchildren Linh Sasser, Laura Lee Kerr, Melissa Angles and husband Jarred, Timothy Kerr, and Emily Mae Kerr, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be all day Friday, April 24, at Community Funeral Home, Guthrie, Oklahoma. The family will be available from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. to welcome friends.
