Obituary

John (Jay) Edward Lawrence Jr.

March 31, 1950 – September 7, 2023

John (Jay) Lawrence was born on March 31,1950 in Mount Vernon, NY to John and Frances (Kernstock) Lawrence. He died on September 7, 2023 in Guthrie, OK.

Growing up in Pelham, NY, he was very active in the Boy Scouts of America program. A favorite highlight of his scouting years was a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in NM with his dad, the Leader of the Troop. Through dedication, determination, and commitment, Jay earned and was awarded scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.

He graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 1968, where he enjoyed and excelled in a variety of sports.

Jay attended Ft. Lauderdale University in FL. It was during these college years, that he discovered his love for flying, a passion that helped guide him in career decisions throughout his life.

After college, Jay joined the US Air Force in 1972 and earned his wings. During his years in the Air Force, he flew all over the world doing Flight Inspection, while also, obtaining his Air Traffic Control certification. Over

the years, he shared many exciting stories of his flying adventures with family and friends.

Jay joined the FAA in 1986, assuming a variety of roles within the agency over many years to follow. As was his desire, in each new position, Jay continued to fly.

While flying for the FAA, Jay met his future wife, Christine. She too, was a Flight Inspection pilot. In 1992 they were married in Oklahoma City, OK.

Jay had a love of life and enjoyed every minute. He flew around the world several times, including flights flying over the North Pole and flights that landed at the South Pole.

Jay walked in a lot of different shoes throughout his 73 years on this earth. He was an expert pilot for over 40 years, an experienced downhill snow skier, scuba diver, Yoga Master, outdoors and hunting enthusiast, boater, motorcyclist, auction enthusiast, and fixer of almost everything. His famous saying was “You break it and I’ll fix it”. He always saw the good in everyone and never met a stranger, a gracious host who loved entertaining family and friends.

Jay is survived by his wife of 31 years, Christine, his sister, Veronica, 3 nephews, and 5 great nephews and niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents John (1991), Frances (2018), and a great nephew (2012).

A party to celebrate and remember Jay’s life will be held at a later date in Guthrie, OK. A private family service will be held at Maple Cemetery in Kirkland, IL.
