John was born April 27, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. When he was three years old, the family moved to Hickory Hills, a suburb of Chicago. He graduated from Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in 1973. He then attended Moraine Valley Junior College. From there he went to Western Illinois University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in geography. He met his wife there and on their first date she witnessed to him. Soon after, he became a Christian and changed his life course. Instead of going to Iowa State to earn his master's degree, he enrolled at Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri. After two years of schooling, he changed his mind about his career and got his insurance license. Church Mutual Insurance Company hired him in 1983. He was a sales rep and then a sales manager until he retired in 2017. He enjoyed reading books. He was a collector of Civil War, World War II, and theology books. He had quite an extensive library and he enjoyed giving books to others. He was an avid ice hockey fan and enjoyed many KC Blades, Oklahoma City Blazers and Barons games and was an avid Colorado Avalanche fan. in Oklahoma City.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Charlotte Zimmerman, and infant son Joshua Caleb Zimmerman.
He is survived by: His wife Jan of the home in Edmond, daughters; Julie Zimmerman, Jackie Zimmerman Tessneer and husband Chris, grandchildren; Chase, Michael, Ethan, and Jamison Tessneer, his sister Donna Forsberg and husband Ron, brothers; Bill and Joe Zimmerman, nieces; Holly and Nicole, and nephew Ronnie, along with many other relatives and friends.
