Leslie J. Canning was born in Guthrie, May 22, 1937 to Emmitt J. and Martha Viola (Ruhl) Canning.
He spent all his life in Guthrie, graduating high school in 1956. He first went to work for Smith Funeral Home and then moved on to work for Crabtree Gas Station. It was there, he met his first wife, Thelma. After their divorce, Leslie went to work for the Oklahoma Furniture Factory. In 1960, he met his second wife, Lina Ruth James. They were married February 22, 1963 and had three children; Patricia Ruth, John William and Martha Elizabeth.
Leslie loved everyone he saw because he never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, his father and mother, his son, John, grandparents, his siblings; Buddy, Charles and Violet, his brother-in-law, Blair Arnold and sister-in-law, Bunny.
He is survived by his two daughters; Patricia Canning and Martha (Britton) Copeland, granddaughter, Danielle (Thomas) Sasser, four grandsons; Steven Canning, Dillon Beasly, Casey and Shane Prescott, two great-grandsons; Cole Cooke and Korbyn Sasser, his sister, Dorothy Swanson and his nephews and nieces; Donny (Barri) Canning and many more that he loved and thought of every holiday with letters or a card. He loved making people smile.
Leslie was a wonderful husband, brother, uncle and father.
He will be missed by us all.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 5, 6 pm to 8 pm.
Funeral services with be in the chapel at Community Funeral Home, 1624 N. Pine Street, 2:00 p.m., March 6, 2020. Interment to follow at Summit View Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Community Funeral Home.
