Elizabeth Ann (Libby) Zaage, 69, of Guthrie passed away on August 2, 2022 at her home. She was born in Pasadena, Texas on February 26, 1953 to Lige Lee and Frances (Hickman) Mims.
Libby was raised in Splendora, Texas and told us many stories of growing up there and many of her exploits as a youth and would have everyone in stitches. She met Erick Zaage and they married on May 20, 1970 in Houston, Texas by eloping and skipping the big wedding that her parents had planned.
Erick was in the military and the young couple began their married life in Louisiana before moving to the rain forests of Panama. They had their first child, a daughter Ericka, while living in Panama. After the young family returned to the United States, in Austin they added a son, Curtis Richard (Butch) to the family, then moved to Houston when Erick left the service.
They lived in Houston for 31 years where Libby’s most important job was taking care of her family. After Erick retired from the Houston Metro Transit System, Erick and Libby sold their home and began traveling. On one trip, Libby decided she wanted to go to Detroit to see a polar bear at the zoo. They took a 700-mile detour and Libby got to see her polar bear. They moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma in 2006 so they could be close to their daughter and her family.
Libby cherished her family and friends, and all knew that she loved them. She loved going to Hobby Lobby and making Christmas stockings and beautiful bows. Libby also enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel and she loved to cook for family and friends. Her motto was, “bring the bowl back to me if you want me to cook for your again.” Dessert was her favorite dinner course and when going out to eat with her girlfriends, they would often order one dessert and 3 forks.
She was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a philanthropic organization and had held the office of President for the local chapter Kappa Theta, as well as serving as the DIANA chairman for the Oklahoma State Council. Libby also enjoyed delivering meals for the Logan County Aging Services Meals on Wheels Program and cared very much for the elderly that she served there. Every year at Christmas, she would buy fruit and donate it to the program so they would have a treat.
Libby was a part time employee at Community Funeral Home and Memory Gardens Memorial Park. She spent a lot of time with Jacque Cantrel and Connie Johnson and the three were known as the “3 Musketeers” and were inseparable.
She is preceded in death by her parents. Libby is survived by her husband Erick Zaage of the home, her son Curtis Richard (Butch) Zaage of Rogers, Arkansas, her sister Carol Mathis of Lufkin, Texas, grandchildren Skylar Zaage and Christopher Hanninen as well as her “babies” dogs Brandi and Buddy, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Libby was a special person that touched many, many lives and will be sorely missed by all that knew her. We have peace in knowing that she will be watching over us and waiting for us until we join her again one day.
The family requests any memorial contributions in her name be made to the Logan County Aging Services Meals on Wheels Program, 1102 E Warner Ave, Guthrie, OK 73044 or to the St. Jude Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis TN 38148-0142 as both of these causes were near and dear to Libby’s heart.
