Lois Joann Backhaus was welcomed into this world by her parents, George J. and Hilda Johnson, on June 28, 1933, in Lahoma, Oklahoma. Lois grew up on the family farm in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, alongside her two siblings, Verona June and Verdean Johnson. She graduated from Big Four High School, a rural school district outside of Kingfisher.
While growing up on the farm, Lois dreamt of marrying a farmer. Lois participated in church activities at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kingfisher, and attended Camp Lutherhaven church camp outside of Woodward, Oklahoma. There, she met Marvin Clarence Backhaus, and after dating for a couple of years, her dreams came true. Lois and Marvin were married on June 2, 1951, in her church, Emmanuel Lutheran in Kingfisher, and they established their home on Marvin’s family farm in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Lois had become the quintessential farmer’s wife, raising five children; Carol Joann, Marcella Ann, Marvin Paul, Janet Lois, and Linda Kay, all while helping to run the family farm, tending to cattle, chickens and pigs, doing the field work of raising wheat, oats and alfalfa and baling hay as well as keeping a garden that produced fruits and vegetables for the family table.
Lois was also very active in both of her churches in Guthrie, Zion Lutheran and Our Savior Lutheran. She had been blessed with a beautiful singing voice, which she used to glorify the Lord in church services and Christmas cantatas. Lois also gave several public solo performances, including several times at the National Stockyard Conventions in downtown OKC’s Skirvin Hotel. She was very passionate about singing and music.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband of 68 years, Marvin Clarence Backhaus, and her daughter, Marcella Ann Meador. Lois was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday January 8, 2022, at the age of 88. She is survived by three daughters and one son, Carol Joann De La Peña, Janet Lois Drumright, Linda Kaye Frohock and Marvin Paul Backhaus. She will be sorely missed by her nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
